Myth and Facts: Ropes Are Effective Snake Deterrent

When you were a child, you may have joined a camping trip wherein your scout leader advised you to put a rope on the ground. According to the old legend, this will apparently be effective in keeping the snakes away. It may sound ridiculous, but it was a widely accepted fact during those days. Until today, some people are hanging ropes on their porch, believing that it will keep them safe from snakes.

Are Ropes Effective in Repelling Snakes?
Some random experiments suggest that rope may be able to deter some snakes, but this will still need some scientific proof. In reality, snakes can just cross over the rope, and this has been observed multiple times. However, there are also some situations when snakes will find other ways. Experts believe that it is similar to some people who are fine walking bare-footed on the grass, while others may find this uncomfortable. Nonetheless, once the snakes have been trapped inside the rope, they will still crawl across that rope just like any obstacle.

Where Did the Myth Start?
The idea of using ropes as a snake's deterrent can be traced back to the good-ole Cowboy days. They believe back then that by surrounding your beddings with ropes, there will be no way that the snakes can cross over, and you will be perfectly safe when you sleep. Due to the lack of antivenin those days, they are always looking for ways to avoid the deadly bites of some snakes. They even thought that some type of ropes, such as the horsehair rope, would be a more effective repellent. According to our forefathers, this will apparently scratch the belly of these reptiles. However, there is no slight amount of truth to this. Snakes have been crossing rougher surfaces such as sands, cactus, and ragged rocks.

What Can I Use to Scare Off the Snakes?
There are no snakes' repellents sold in the market that will be effective in keeping this creature away. As long as they are motivated to enter your premises, they will invade your area. Even high-ultrasonic machines are ineffective in deterring them. Devices that cause vibration present too many challenges. Snakes will not be afraid of anything as long as it will not kill them. The best way to ensure that your place is free from these slithering creatures is to introduce preventive measures. For instance, try to surround your perimeter with a snake fence. You should also mow your lawn and trim the overgrown branches, shrubs, and bushes. If you have a rat infestation, solving the problem will make your place less tempting in the eye of the snakes. While snakes may be drawn to warm areas, it still does not make any sense that the snake will attack a massive predator while they are asleep. Therefore, there is still no point in surrounding your bed with ropes. Snakes are solitary animals and will not approach an area with signs of human activities. Unless you have things that will attract them on your bed, there is no way that they will crawl even inside your sleeping bag.
